Who was Mary Church Terrell?

Mary Church Terrell was an African American woman who played a very important role in the struggle for equality for black women in America.

Mary Church Terrell was a teacher, a speaker, a writer, and a mother.  She worked with Susan B. Anthony in the fight for women's right to vote, and fought against lynching.  Her work paved the way for Black History Month.

One of the most interesting facts about her life is that she did most of her important work when she was nearly ninety years old!  Starting at the age of eighty six she led a campaign to end segregation in Washington, DC.  She picketed restaurants and stores, organized sit-ins, and protested with others.  Because of her work her campaign resulted in a series of court trials. The case was settled, which was historical. Mary Church Terrell's campaign helped inspire protest in cities around her a couple years later. She fought for racial equality for about sixty years!
